Untitled and
Unrecalled
"Untitlited and Unrecalled" abstractly assesses the meaning of memory and sentimentality. Through distortion of detail and incorporation of digital image in small dark spaces, a narrative of disappearing memory unfolds. The pictures within the frame are intended to visually appear similarly to afterimages, the type of image that remains after you close your eyes, especially as a reaction to digital screens. This project exists as a digital precursor to the body of work "After Image".
These photographs capture the fragmented and mystic reality of memory. Displays of dreamscapes with kaleidoscoping fragments of family, place, and moments present themselves all on the same plane. By condensing these moments into a two-dimensional surface, the viewer is forced to search for clues as to what the story may be. The incorporation of physical space among the digital renderings creates a scattered daydream, much like the experience of someone who is unable to fully recall their past. The internal experience of memory is an important core foundation of existence. It’s why dementia has often been called “the death that leaves the body behind”. These images represent a rich collection of moments, but a single concise narrative is never fully revealed.
